Ethanol Bio Fuel - Raw Materials

Ethanol Bio-fuel production from common raw materials

Ethanol can be used as an gasoline extender in "gasohol" - which is

  • petrol (gasoline) with up to approximately 25% ethanol

Ethanol can be produced by fermenting different raw materials. Ethanol yields for some common raw materials are indicated in the table below:

Material Ethanol Yield
(liter ethanol/kg raw material) (liter ethanol/m2 area land)
Cassava roots 0.18 0.05 - 0.4
Maize grain 0.36 0.03 - 0.2
Sugar cane stalks 0.07 0.04 - 1.2
Sweet potato roots 0.12 0.1 - 0.5
Wood 0.16 0.02 - 0.4
