Energy balance and energy payback ratio

The terms "energy balance" and "energy payback ratio", or "energy ratio", are used to describe the relationship between the energy output of a system and the energy inputs needed to operate it.

The energy balance can be expressed as:

E_o = dE + E_i (1)

or

dE = E_o - E_i  (1b)

where

dE = energy balance

E_o = energy output

E_i = energy input

The energy ratio can be expressed as:

ER = E_o / E_i (2)

where

ER = energy ratio
